Acne Treatment

Acne is a skin condition affecting teens and adults.  While the use of some over-the-counter medications and daily cleaning of one's face and hair daily can help lessen the effects, acne is a medical condition that can be caused by genetics and other factors completely out of one's control.  The social effects of acne are significant. Chronic acne can lead to permanent acne scarring.  (See acne scarring).

Dr. Berg uses an individualized approach to treat acne.  A variety of therapies are used to achieve the best results possible.  These approaches may include medication, in office skin treatments, as well as light based approaches.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused by the build-up of bacteria. This can happen when there is too much oil production by the skin and when dead skin cells become clogged in skin pores. Hormones, bacteria, medications, and heredity all play a role. Contrary to many popular beliefs, diet has little to do with acne. Acne is not caused by dirt.

Who typically has acne?

Acne may affect all people of all ages, but teenagers (both male and female), pregnant women, and people taking certain medications are at higher risk. Some cosmetic products may cause acne.

Should I see Dr. Berg for acne treatment?

If you are experiencing persistent pimples, inflamed cysts (painful pus-filled bumps and boil-like infections under the skin), you should see a dermatologist to avoid permanent acne scarring. In addition to the permanent scarring, acne can be an emotional stress inducing factor for teenagers. Acne is a treatable medical condition and long term scarring can be prevented.
